Every year as March 17th rolls around, we haul out our green clothes, maybe pour a little Irish cheer, and start boiling the famous corned beef and cabbage. Why? We seem to love St. Patrick’s Day! Irish or not, by the time this date rolls around, many are looking for a reason to celebrate, ways to entertain and the nostalgia of St. Patrick’s Day past. However, what if this St. Patrick’s Day we aimed for something more lasting than a fleeting pot of gold and a simmering pot of cabbage water? Imagine if we embraced a little four-leaf clover energy this year instead and we ended up a little happier, healthier, and even luckier than we started?

The traditional shamrock of St. Patrick’s Day is said to represent the Holy Trinity, it’s the four-leaf clover that brings something many people are looking for these days: GOOD LUCK! Historians like Mike Cronin, PhD, and Marion R. Casey, PhD, who specialize in Irish history and culture, share that the four-leaf clover is widely regarded as a blend of history, folklore, and a little imagination, according to their research shared at New York University  (http://as.nyu.edu/irelandhouse/people/faculty.marion-casey.html). For today’s purposes, we are leaning into the old legend that the rare four-leaf clover is a lucky quartet that came to represent the leaves of faith, hope, love, and luck.

Whether you’re Irish by heritage or just Irish for the day, these four qualities are a powerful prescription for whole-person wellness. So, let’s grab our metaphorical walking sticks and follow this rainbow journey towards better health and wellness brought to you by that lucky four-leaf clover energy!

First leaves first: Faith. Faith doesn’t have to mean religion, for some it does, others its spirituality, and for some it’s not something they can easily put into words. Typically, faith means a belief in something larger than yourself and may lead to trust in your life, leading to a certain path. The National Institute of Health shares in their research study, “Religious Communities and Human Flourishing,” (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) that spiritual connection and faith communities are associated with lower stress, stronger social support, and even improved longevity. Who knew? Having faith may be just what we need to help us get through the long winter and mud season of the NEK! The study sites, “…there is now a large body of rigorous empirical studies with longitudinal data and good confounding control that indicate that religious community is a major contributor to human flourishing.” What’s even luckier, faith is known to calm the nervous system. This leaf reminds us we are part of something bigger than our daily to-do list, and perhaps have access to a calmer mind, body and even spirit right in our neighborhoods.

Leaf two: Hope: Hope is the sparkle at the end of the rainbow! It’s a quiet belief that tomorrow can be better than today and it’s worth waiting to find out! In her column, Hope as the Antidote, Ashley Abramson shares with the American Psychological Association how psychologists have long identified hope as a cornerstone of mental health. Hope isn’t blind optimism; it’s the belief that our actions matter. It fuels resilience. It keeps us moving when the road feels uphill. This is lucky! When we cultivate hope, we improve our outlook, lower our stress, and increase motivation. Hope encourages healthy habits while whispering, “Keep going, you’re worth it!”

Leaf three: Love: Love isn’t just romance. It’s partnership, companionship, and friendship. Love is your cat waiting in your front window. It’s when someone leaves the light on for you. It’s laughing with your neighbor. It’s choosing kindness when you could choose complaint. This is perhaps the luckiest leaf, because from a health and well-being perspective, love is no small shamrock! Strong relationships are linked to lower blood pressure, healthier immune systems, and longer lives. Feeling connected reduces anxiety and strengthens emotional resilience. That’s a special leaf right there!

Leaf four: Luck. Some people may say luck isn’t real, others say you can manifest it. While some say it’s all about perspective. How lucky are you? You can breathe. You can move your body. You have access to clean water. You have someone who knows your name. You woke up this morning. That’s not foolish leprechaun talk; that’s more than luck…it’s gratitude. Dr. Caroline Leaf (no pun intended), a neuroscientist, Mental Health Expert, and author, shared on her Facebook page about how practicing gratitude shows measurable improvements in mood, sleep quality, and overall well-being. When we recognize our everyday “luck,” we shift from scarcity to abundance. We stop chasing pots of gold and start noticing the gold already in our hands.

A four-leaf clover is rare, but having a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life is even more valuable! With a new four-leaf clover mindset, we can remind ourselves how to embrace health and wellness in all ways when we channel the lessons of the four-leaf clover. With that said, may your days feel rich, your heart be light, your outlook bright, and your life filled with an abundance of health, happiness, and wellness;  just keep using that Four-Leaf Clover Energy.
