North Country Hospital is seeing a seasonal increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly influenza, a trend that typically occurs during the winter months across the region. In response, the hospital is encouraging patients and visitors to wear a mask while inside the facility as an added step to help reduce the spread of illness.

Hospital leaders emphasize that this is a proactive and preventative measure intended to protect patients, visitors, and staff—especially those who may be more vulnerable to respiratory infections, including older adults, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

“We’re in the heart of flu season, and we’re seeing more cases in our community,” said hospital officials. “Wearing a mask is a simple way to help keep one another healthy and ensure we can continue providing safe, high-quality care to everyone who needs it.”

Mask use is strongly encouraged but not mandatory, and the hospital will continue to monitor local illness trends and adjust guidance as appropriate. Hand hygiene, staying home when sick, and getting a flu shot remain important tools in preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses.

North Country Hospital remains committed to providing care that is personal, close to home, and rooted in the well-being of the communities it serves throughout Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
