North Country Hospital is proud to support the next generation of health care professionals through a variety of scholarship opportunities. These scholarships were established by generous donors, dedicated employees, and community members who believe in investing in the future of health care in the Northeast Kingdom.
Each scholarship reflects the legacy of individuals who made a meaningful impact on our hospital and community. By supporting students pursuing careers in health care, these funds help ensure that compassionate, skilled professionals will continue to serve our region for years to come.
An applicant must be a resident of the North Country Hospital Service area:
- Intending to pursue a career in healthcare
- OR presently training for a healthcare career
- OR already providing patient care in the healthcare field and interested in continuing his/her education in that field.
The scholarship award will be based on:
- Completed application
- Achievement, aptitude, and scholastics
- Proof of motivation
- Need

Recipients must contact the hospital with school contact information and transcripts immediately following each school year for subsequent scholarship payments to be awarded. This is not an automatic renewal. A continued healthcare career course of study and a grade point average of at least 3.0, or its equivalent, must be maintained for consideration. The Scholarship Committee also reserves the right to request an interview or additional information
Available Scholarships
- Toni Smith Memorial Scholarship
Established by the parents of Toni Marie Smith, this scholarship honors Toni’s work as a respiratory care therapist at North Country Hospital. Since 1983, the fund has supported students pursuing careers in respiratory therapy. Toni passed away from melanoma at the age of 28, and her legacy continues through this scholarship and through the many patients and colleagues whose lives she touched. - Health Care Careers Scholarship Fund (Golf Tournament)
This scholarship fund is supported through our annual golf scramble and provides financial assistance to students pursuing careers in health care. Each year, the tournament brings together community members and supporters who share a commitment to strengthening the future of health care in our region.
- Mary Jean Grime Radiology Scholarship Fund
This scholarship honors the memory of Mary Jean Grime, a dedicated member of the North Country Hospital Mammography Department for more than 22 years. Known for her exceptional attention to detail and compassionate care, Mary Jean made a lasting impact on both her colleagues and her patients. This fund supports students pursuing careers in radiology in tribute to her legacy. - Caryl B. Custer Scholarship for Nursing Students
Created at the request of Dr. Keith Custer, this scholarship honors the nursing career and dedication of his wife, Caryl B. Custer. A nurse manager for many years in Florida, Caryl was passionate about supporting nursing students. This scholarship continues that tradition by helping individuals pursue a degree in nursing.
- North Country Hospital Legends Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was created in recognition of the extraordinary dedication of Cecile Gelineau, RN, who served North Country Hospital for more than 40 years. The “Legends” fund honors individuals whose commitment and service have made a lasting impact on our hospital, with the goal of celebrating future North Country Hospital legends as well. - Sheryl M. (Washburn) and Buddy L. Carter Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Sheryl Washburn, former Vice President of Patient Care at North Country Hospital, and her husband Buddy Carter. Sheryl has long been passionate about supporting rural health care and encouraging Northeast Kingdom residents to pursue nursing careers. The scholarship also honors the memory of Sheryl’s late husband, John Washburn, who received compassionate care from NCH nurses prior to his passing in 2013.
